This event is part of a series of “Third Thursday” events that we are holding every month leading up to our 50th anniversary block party in October. Presented by Friends of the Great Highway and in collaboration with NoBAWC, who is celebrating their 30th anniversary, please consider donating here to help offset programming and permit costs.
Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff, the author of four books including her most recent
cookbook, Cooking Together: A Vegetarian Co-op Cookbook will host a cooking
demonstration at Other Avenues on Thursday, May 16th, 2024.
Shanta will first discuss the benefits of cooking together to build community. By
sharing food and cooking we can enhance our knowledge, skill and kinship.
Shanta will talk about the tradition of pickling in various cultures in order to
preserve and enhance the food items. Health benefits of eating pickled and
fermented foods will also be discussed.
The preserved pickles sold in grocery stores can take a long time to make.
However, in this workshop we will learn how to prepare pickles quickly, and how
to keep them for weeks in a refrigerator. Shanta will point out when to find
pickling cucumbers in food stores and farmers markets and how to select them.
Shanta will also discuss the importance of buying cucumbers (and other
vegetables) used in this recipe that are free of chemical spray. Next, Shanta will
demonstrate how to prepare refrigerator pickles, using a quick and simple method
that requires only 6 ingredients.
At the end of the event, a tasting of prepared pickles will be served along with a
cup of Shanta’s home-made chai and crackers. Shanta will take questions from the
audience. Signed copies of Shanta’s cookbooks will be available at the workshop.
